What you need to know

Summer is a great time to get outdoors, enjoy time with family and friends, and make the most of longer days. But warmer weather, increased sun exposure and changes to our usual routines can also bring a few health challenges.

Here are some simple ways to stay well this summer.

Stay hydrated

When temperatures rise, your body loses more fluid through sweat. Make sure you drink regularly throughout the day, particularly when you’re exercising or spending time outdoors.

Water is the best choice for staying hydrated, and it’s a good idea to carry a bottle with you when you’re out and about.

Protect your skin from the sun

Sun protection is important even on cooler or cloudy summer days. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a suitable SPF, apply it generously and reapply regularly, particularly after swimming or sweating.

Remember to protect yourself in other ways too, such as seeking shade during the hottest part of the day, wearing lightweight clothing and using a hat and sunglasses.

Look after your eyes

Bright sunlight can be uncomfortable for your eyes, so good-quality sunglasses can help protect them from UV exposure. Look for sunglasses offering 100% UVA and UVB protection.

Watch out for hayfever

Summer can be difficult for people affected by hay fever. Symptoms such as sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes and an irritated throat can make enjoying the outdoors more challenging.

If hay fever is affecting you, speak to your pharmacist about the range of treatments available and which option may be suitable for you.

Don't forget your medicines

If you’re heading away on holiday, make sure you have enough of your regular medicines for the duration of your trip. Keep medicines stored according to their instructions and, where appropriate, protect them from excessive heat.

If you’re travelling abroad, it’s also worth checking whether you need any travel vaccinations or other health advice before you go.

Enjoy summer safely

A little preparation can go a long way towards keeping you and your family healthy throughout the summer. If you’re unsure about a health concern or need advice about treatments, speak to your local pharmacy team.

Your local M&D Green Pharmacy is here to help you stay well all summer long.
